Summary:

From 14 July to 28 October 2012, the American Museum in Britain, Claverton Manor, Bath, will stage an exhibition evocatively entitled By Way of These Eyes that will present treasures from textile designer Christopher Hyland’s comprehensive collection of American photography. Hyland, president of one of the world’s leading firms specialising in luxury fabrics and founder of the acclaimed HYLAND lifestyle magazine, describes collecting photography as one of the greatest adventures of his life.

Permanent Collection:

The American Museum in Britain is celebrated for its magnificent decorative arts collection comprising over 200 historic American quilts, exceptional pieces of Shaker furniture, exuberant folk art paintings and sculptures, Native American objects, and Renaissance maps of the New World. The Museum also has the most significant collection of American folk art in Europe displayed in the Folk Art Gallery which opened in 2011. Visitors may also explore the extensive grounds, including the Arboretum of American trees.

The Museum is close to the University of Bath and is signposted from Bath City Centre and from the A36 Warminster Road.

Public Transport:

Bus No.18 runs from Bath city centre to the University; alight at The Avenue just inside the University entrance (15-minute downhill walk to Museum).

Accessibility:

All Museum buildings are wheelchair accessible, with ramped access and a lift to all floors in the main building. Blue Badge parking is close to the main Museum. Garden access is restricted.

The American Museum has three shops, all open during Museum hours.
The Country Store holds Americana gifts and souvenirs; The Gallery Shop offers merchandise inspired by the temporary exhibition and a variety of Museum publications alongside a range of topical books and The Herb Shop introduces visitors to the aromatic Tussie Mussie (a posy popular in the 18th century).
